AN EXPERIENCE OF HYPNOTIC,
GROOVY HOUSE BEATS
Ashton Joe, known by his music alias Joey Lou, is a DJ & producer who loves taking his listeners on a journey through the power of storytelling, a skill he learned from the magic of filmmaking. Ashton’s story with music begins at the age of 12 years old, when he started learning the trumpet. He also learned how to play the drums and guitar before graduating high school. Music has always played a special role in discovering himself and he aims to spread that effect on everyone around him.
Throughout high school, Ashton had a best friend named Victor who also played the trumpet and had an uncle that was a resident DJ at a club in Houston. “I remember going over to Victor’s house, and he’d be like, ‘bro check out these decks my uncle gave me.’ I had no idea what the hell I was looking at – they were humongous back then – but I remember the speakers were insane. We’d bump at max volume and lose our shit. Thankfully his parents were super chill about it.”
Victor was also the first to introduce electronic music to Ashton. Artists like Deadmau5, Skrillex, Nero, and Eric Prydz stayed in rotation. ‘Strobe’ by deadmau5 was a track he’d fall asleep to every night. “I remember the first time I pulled an all-nighter. Victor and I dove into Fruity Loops and started working on a track we later named ‘Flasker.’ The sun was coming up, Victor was dead asleep, and I was looking for inspiration. The best thing I could find was an empty silver flask on Victor’s desk. Typical high-schoolers.” He knew at that point that electronic music would play a pivotal role in his life.
Today, Ashton is inspired by artists like Hot Since 82, Mochakk, Chris Stussy, Michael Bibi, and Audiojack. “I’m obsessed with that deep, hypnotic groove that sends you to another atmosphere.” Building a unique collection of music is what he loves most about being a DJ. “I only started DJ’ing in 2020, but before I was that guy who had 4,000+ likes on SoundCloud, constantly showing my friends new tracks I discovered. Only difference now is that I use a USB.”
